Your child will usually start to get their milk teeth at around six months old. We recommend that you schedule their first dental examination when they reach the age of two, and following this, between every three and twelve months. Plaque can start to form on young teeth as soon as they emerge, and it’s important to implement a good oral health routine early – starting with that first tooth.

Helpful Ways To Prevent Cavities:

  • Always choose healthy snacks for your child
  • Only give treats alongside meals
  • Watch what your child consumes
  • Restrict your child’s frequency of mealtimes and snacks
  • Encourage your child to brush, floss, and rinse their teeth
  • Make sure you avoid giving your child  sticky and sugary foods
  • Remind your child to brush their teeth (when they appear) twice a day for at least two minutes

Cavities are a very common dental condition seen in children. They typically occur as a result of consuming too much sugar and neglecting to brush their teeth. Proper brushing and cutting down on sugar intake can certainly reduce cavities in a child’s mouth. The more time a child spends chewing and the longer food stays on their teeth, the more chances for cavities. If you eat a diet that’s high in carbs and sugar, it will cause your saliva to be thicker, which will increase the production of the acid-producing bacteria that cause cavities.

Fissure Sealants

Sealants are a safe and painless way of protecting your teeth from tooth decay. A sealant is a protective plastic coating, which is applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant forms a hard shield that keeps food and bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay.

Fluoride varnish application

Research shows that fluoride varnish is highly effective at reducing tooth decay if it is applied twice a year. Fluoride varnish should be applied at least twice yearly in all children.

Fluoride varnish provides extra protection against tooth decay when used in addition to brushing. Fluoride varnish is a pale yellow gel that sets quickly when applied to children’s teeth using a soft brush. The varnish sets quickly, has a pleasant taste and a fruity smell.

Scientific studies have shown that fluoride varnish gives added protection to teeth against decay when used in addition to brushing teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste.

How To Help Children Brush Their Teeth Properly

  1. First, make sure to guide your child’s hand so that they can experience the movement of the toothbrush
  2. Simply holding a mirror in front of your child as they brush their teeth will allow them to see what their toothbrush is doing.
  3. Brushing your teeth doesn’t have to be a mundane activity, you can make it more exciting for your child by setting an egg timer on for two minutes.
  4. Warn your child that holding the toothbrush in their mouth while running around could cause them to get hurt.
