Can I whiten my teeth with composite bonding at Dove Dental & Wellbeing Spa? We are so glad you asked! Composite bonding is an ideal procedure for patients who want to fix their smiles and to whiten their teeth. To find out more about how you can whiten your teeth with composite bonding keep reading or give us a call today to schedule an appointment with our friendly team!

How Does Composite Bonding Respond To Colour?

A composite resin bonding is stain-resistant on the surface, but if you attempt to whiten it with whitening products it will not change colour and appear whiter. This is because natural teeth are porous, and composite resin is not.

If the bleaching agent penetrates the pores of your teeth, then a staining agent may also enter the teeth, making them look even more yellow. A similar process happens to make teeth whiter: a whitening agent is also able to enter your teeth to lighten their colour.

In addition, the resin is nonporous, so whitening agents can’t penetrate it. As a result, your bonded teeth may appear stained and discoloured in certain areas due to the contrast between them and your natural teeth. A composite bonding material is composed of a solution of inorganic filler particles, like quartz or glass, bound together in a plastic matrix. This material absorbs stains, which will then become part of the bonding structure. Drinking a lot of coffee or tea, for example, will penetrate the plastic and cause permanent staining.

Can Composite Bonded Teeth Be Whitened?

Composite bonding usually can be replaced successfully, so it is entirely possible to whiten your teeth even if they have been bonded. You can also easily improve the appearance of your smile with porcelain veneers if you are interested in completely changing its appearance.

Options For Whitening Composite Bonding Teeth

If you want to ensure that all of your visible teeth are the same colour, you will need to take an extra step to whiten your bonded teeth. You have two options:

Replace the bonding – After you get your teeth whitened, you can ask your cosmetic dentist to remove the resin on your teeth, which will turn them back to a natural shade. Afterwards, they can repeat the bonding process, this time using a resin in the same colour as your newly-whitened teeth.

Think about getting veneers – Following a whitening treatment, you might need your dentist to replace your old tooth and change it for a veneer. Veneers are more permanent than bonding, which is made of porous porcelain that is not resistant to stains. You need to make a few trips to the dentist, but many patients feel it’s worth it.

How To Keep Your Smile Bright After Composite Bonding

When you get dental composite bonding, you can take the following steps to keep your smile bright and beautiful for a long time:

  • Maintain good oral hygiene – brush twice a day and floss once a day
  • Avoid highly pigmented foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, colas, or red wine.
  • Quit smoking
  • Visit the dentist twice a year for regular dental scaling and polishing.
